Treatment
Functional Nasal Surgery
A surgical approach that prioritises improving breathing while preserving the appearance of the nose.
Functional nasal surgery covers the surgical management of causes that restrict breathing, such as a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or narrowing of the nasal valve.
The aim is not simply to open the airway but to achieve a lasting result by preserving the supporting structure of the nose. Form and function are therefore planned together.
Who is it considered for?
The situations below are assessed during examination; suitability is determined individually.
- People with persistent nasal obstruction who breathe through the mouth
- Those found to have a deviated septum or nasal valve narrowing
- People who want to improve breathing without any aesthetic change
- Those whose symptoms persist despite nasal sprays
Signs and complaints
If one or more of these complaints applies to you, an examination is advisable.
- Nasal obstruction on one or both sides
- Sleeping with the mouth open, dry mouth, snoring
- Fatigue and morning headache
- A sense of insufficient airflow during exercise
The Doctor's Approach
Planning built around you
The source of a breathing complaint is not the same in every patient. Detailed examination therefore establishes at which level the obstruction arises before anything else.
When surgery is planned, the supporting structures of the nose are preserved; the aim is that no unwanted change in appearance occurs.
The Process
How does the treatment process work?
These stages describe the general flow; each patient's plan is confirmed after examination.
- 01
Defining the complaint
The duration, side and triggers of obstruction are assessed, and accompanying conditions such as allergy are explored.
- 02
Internal examination
The septum, turbinates and nasal valve are examined in detail. Endoscopic assessment is performed where needed.
- 03
Surgical planning
The level requiring intervention is determined. Where necessary, more than one structure may be addressed in the same session.
- 04
Follow-up
Healing inside the nose is monitored at review appointments and care advice is shared.
Recovery and follow-up
Recovery differs according to the procedure performed and to individual factors.
- Fullness and crusting inside the nose may be noticed in the first days.
- Relief in breathing usually becomes clearer as crusting resolves.
- Regular nasal care makes recovery more comfortable.
The timeframes and information here are general; they vary from person to person and do not replace medical advice. The plan that applies to you is determined by your doctor after examination.
Common Questions
Frequently asked questions
In functional surgery the aim is to preserve appearance. That said, some structural corrections can affect appearance to a degree; this possibility is discussed at examination.
In some situations medication can reduce symptoms. The decision on surgery depends on whether the obstruction has a structural cause.
Where the patient wishes it and the anatomy allows, functional and aesthetic planning can be carried out together. This is decided at examination.
