Septoplasty
Surgical correction of obstruction caused by deviation of the septum, the partition that divides the nose.
A deviated septum restricts airflow when the partition inside the nose shifts to one side. It may be present from birth or develop after trauma.
Septoplasty aims to open the airway by correcting this partition. The procedure is not intended to change the external appearance of the nose.
Who is it considered for?
The situations below are assessed during examination; suitability is determined individually.
- People found on examination to have significant septal deviation
- Those with one-sided or alternating nasal obstruction
- People with snoring or disturbed sleep quality related to deviation
- Those found to have structural narrowing alongside recurrent sinusitis

- Marked obstruction, particularly on one side
- Mouth breathing at night and a dry mouth
- Snoring and waking unrefreshed
- Frequently recurring sinusitis or post-nasal drip

Not every case of nasal obstruction is caused by septal deviation. The source of obstruction is therefore examined in detail before any decision on surgery.
During surgery the supporting role of the septum is preserved; the aim is to open the airway without disturbing the structural balance of the nose.

Examination
Internal structures are assessed and the degree of deviation, and its contribution to obstruction, is determined.

Screening for other causes
Accompanying causes such as enlarged turbinates, allergy or valve narrowing are investigated.

Surgery
The procedure is performed from inside the nose and leaves no external scar. It takes place in an operating theatre.

Monitoring recovery
The resolution of crusting inside the nose is monitored at review appointments.

Recovery differs according to the procedure performed and to individual factors.
- A sense of fullness inside the nose in the first days is normal.

Septoplasty is not intended to change external appearance. Where marked external deviation is also present, it is assessed separately and discussed with the patient.
The procedure is performed under anaesthesia. Discomfort afterwards is generally at a level that can be managed with the measures your doctor advises.
With appropriate surgical planning, a lasting result is the goal. New trauma can affect the structure again.
