Treatment

Pediatric ENT

A measured, age-appropriate assessment of adenoid, tonsil, ear and nasal complaints in children.

ENT complaints in children are closely tied to growth and development. Assessment therefore considers not only the current complaint but the child's development as a whole.

Not every complaint requires surgery. The priority is a careful appraisal of observation and medical treatment options.

Who is it considered for?

The situations below are assessed during examination; suitability is determined individually.

  • Children who sleep with the mouth open and snore
  • Those with frequently recurring ear infections
  • Children with frequent throat infections and tonsil complaints
  • Children where there is any concern about hearing

Signs and complaints

If one or more of these complaints applies to you, an examination is advisable.

  • Sleeping with the mouth open, snoring and restless sleep
  • Frequently recurring earache or discharge
  • Difficulty hearing, not responding when called
  • Frequent throat infections and poor appetite

The Doctor's Approach

Planning built around you

With paediatric patients it matters that the examination proceeds calmly and in a way the child finds comfortable. The family is kept informed throughout.

A decision on surgery is never rushed; the frequency of symptoms, the child's development and the response to medical treatment are weighed together.

The Process

How does the treatment process work?

These stages describe the general flow; each patient's plan is confirmed after examination.

  1. 01

    Discussion with the family

The frequency of complaints, sleep pattern and effects on school and development are assessed.

  2. 02

    Examination

Ear, nose, adenoid and throat structures are examined using methods suited to the child.

  3. 03

    Testing where needed

A hearing test or other assessments may be arranged.

  4. 04

    Plan and monitoring

Observation, medical treatment or, where necessary, surgical options are decided together with the family.

Recovery and follow-up

Recovery differs according to the procedure performed and to individual factors.

  • Where surgery is performed, recovery in children generally progresses quickly.
  • Following the advice on feeding and rest makes the process easier.
  • Review appointments matter for monitoring development.

The timeframes and information here are general; they vary from person to person and do not replace medical advice. The plan that applies to you is determined by your doctor after examination.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

No. The decision follows the severity of symptoms, their effect on sleep and hearing, and the results of monitoring.

Removal of the tonsils does not permanently weaken the immune system. The decision is nonetheless taken only where it is necessary.

The examination proceeds gradually, in a way the child finds comfortable. A calm attitude from the family makes the process markedly easier.
